The fine structure of the osphradia of Architectonicidae and Pyramidellidae is described. In contrast to their different external shape, the sensory epithelium of the osphradium of both families is very similar, but entirely different from that of all true prosobranchs. There are, however, similarities with the osphradia of basa…l Opisthobranchia (Bullomorpha). For the first time it has become possible to study a `living fossil' Laevipilina antarctica, a representative of the family Neopilinidae (Mollusca, Monoplacophora) by means of transmission electron microscopy. This led to the discovery of a bacterial symbiosis in the epidermis of the mantle roof and of the head of the animal. Ba…cteria with varying morphologies were found between the microvilli of the epidermal cells. In addition, modified and specialized epidermal cells (bacteriocytes) were detected in the mantle roof and the post-oral tentacles. In contrast, the sole of the foot and the alimentary tract of the animal are free of symbionts. The bacterial symbionts may be involved in the recycling of dissolved organic matter. 5 pp., 10 figs, 4.

Instead, this book should enable interested amateurs as well as zoologists and oceanographers to identify common species which can easily be found without costly technical equipment. It however also wants to provide an overview about the molluscan fauna of the European seas. The book is intended to encourage interested amateurs and also students of biology to become familiar with Mollusca, a fascinating animal group. A scientific shell collection or a collection of mollusc photographs may be the basis of such an interest. The present book is intended as a "field identification guide", to be applied during excursions and collection trips and should therefore enable the quick identification of mollusc material. Indeed, the vast majority of molluscan findings, if they are not of deep-water origin, should be easily identified at least down to genus level. The book contains more than 1500 species of all molluscan groups (i.e. Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, including Nudibranchs, Bivalvia and Cephalopoda) which are described and discussed in detail and of which about 1400 are pictured usually with several specimens on 350 colour plates. The phytogeny and evolutionary history of the strep-toneuran Gastropoda is reconsidered in the light of (i) recent discoveries of different types of organization, (ii) new data sets based on modern techniques, and (iii) the dado-evolutionary method to trace genealogical relationships. The phylogcnctic analysis by means of tradit…ional (homology-analogy) and cladistic (apomorphy-plesiomorphy) character analysis reveals several conclusions: (1) The Gastropoda originated by torsion from monoplacophoran ancestors after the Cephalopoda split off. Torsion itself is understood as a two-step process, resulting in advantages for the larvae (presence of operculum) and for the adults (anterior mantle cavity). All Gastropoda form a holophyletic group. (2) The proposed gastropod archetype differs Largely from previous suggestions in being more similar to docoglossate gastropocls than to zeugobranchs. (3) The Docoglossa are regarded as the earliest gastropod offshoot, having retained ancestral (atereoglossate) radula conditions. (4) Based on various lines of evidence the 'symmetrical' limpet groups (Docoglossa, including hotvent group-C?, Cocculiniformia), primary without helicoid coiling of teteoconch, are accepted as primithe for the Gastropoda. (5) CocculinifOrmia, Neritimorpha and possibly hot-vent group-A represent distinct archaeogastropod radiations. (6) The Vetigastropoda, originally including zeugobranchs and trochoids are a hotophyletic group and include also the Lepetodriloidea (= hot-vent group-B). In contrast, the Neomphaloidea and Seguen zioidea represent distinct Lines of evolution. (7) According to their hypoathroid or dystenoid nervous system the architaenioglossate groups are included in the *Archaeogastropoda* which are defined as an orthophyletic grade. (8) A major evolutionary gap (a large inaease in size enabled ptanktotrophic larvae; epiathroid nervous system) separates the higher streptoneurans (= *Apogastropoda*) from the *Archaeogastropoda*. The Loxonematoidea are regarded as the common stem group of Caenogastropoda as well as of the ectobranchallogastropodeuthyneuran line (Heterobranchia). (9) The Caenogastropoda are a holophyletic group, of which the Centhioidea represent the basic stock. The Stenoglossa (= Neogastropoda) probably origined from *Neotaenioglossa* sharing distinct simitanSies in sperm-morphology. (10) Canpani1e symbolicum Iredale, 1917 (Campanhimorpha) is a probable representative of the first group that made a distinct step towards the euthyneuran organization. (11). Valvatoidea (Ectobranchia) form a separate offshoot outside the Caenogastropoda. They appear as an independent side-branch at the base of the allogastropod grade. (12) The *Allogastropoda*, a grade, include the fossil Nerineoidea and at least four recent lines (Architectonicoidea & Omalogyridae; Rissoelloidea; Glacidorboidea; Pyramidelloidea) which represent a step by step evolution towards the euthyneuran level of organization. (13) Euthyneura are monophyletic. However, the status of the Opisthobranchia (bob- or paraphyletic) is still ambiguous. The Pulmonata (including the Gymnomorpha) represent a holophyletic assemblage and the own group of Gastropoda. (14) The respective phylogram (Fig. 5) is transformed in a classification by the use of the so-called clado-evotutionary method which enables an unequivocal retransformation and expresses the different degrees of likelihood (correlated with the main evolutionary gaps) in the proposed phylogenetic pathway of the streptoneurous Gastropoda. 81 pp., 5 figs, 5 tabs, br. gr. 8.

Der vorliegende Band über Mittelmeer-Mollusken ist als Feldbestimmungsbuch" konzipiert, das auf Exkursionen mitgenommen werden kann und soll. Es ermöglicht sowohl Zoologen und Meereskundlern als auch interessierten Amateuren die schnelle und sichere Bestimmung von Schnecken- und Muschelgehäusen. Der Schwerpunkt der dargestellten… Arten liegt auf eher kommunen Arten des flachen Wassers sowie Arten, die beim Schnorcheln und Tauchen leicht gefunden werden. Zusätzlich wird jedoch aus fast allen der im Mittelmeer vertretenen Familien einer bis mehrere Vertreter vorgestellt. Schalenfunde sofern sie nicht aus dem Tiefwasser stammen lassen sich mit diesem Buch in der Regel problemlos zumindest bis zur Gattung bestimmen. Das Buch behandelt ca. 750 der Vorderkiemenschnecken (Prosobranchier)- und Muschelarten des Mittelmeeres und deckt somit knapp die Hälfte der dort vorkommenden Arten ab. Alle Arten werden beschrieben und von ähnlichen Arten abgegrenzt. Sie sind mit meist mehreren Exemplaren auf über 2.500 Farbfotos dargestellt. Hinzu kommen Informationen zur Biologie, zum Sammeln, zur Präparation, zum Anlegen einer Sammlung aber auch zu ökologischen und sonstigen Aspekten.
