By this procedure the morphological changes in the brain can be demonstrated directly, and not, as formerly, merely postulated on the ground of functional disturbances. The method has later proved to be of great value in diagnosing expansive intracranial processes. It is also useful in degenerative cerebral disorders. As a result of refined technique and the neuroradiologist's extended knowledge of how the various disorders affect the roentgeno-gram, pneumoencephalography has become an indispensable diagnostic aid in clinical neurology. It is routinely used in all neurological clinics. But as late as 1950 Trolle & Fog found it necessary to recommend more extensive use of pneumoencephalography in neurological disorders.
