A keen military officer and sportsman throughout his life, Colonel Peter Hawker not only enjoyed the challenge that technical innovation and adaptation of certain sporting guns brought him, he was also at leisure, with large, independent means and numerous people at his command. For most of his adult life Hawker wrote a diary, extracts of which - on sporting subjects - were published posthumously.
