Primera edición, muy raro en comercio. Pinto, Héctor. Covilha, Betra (Portugal), 1528 sup. - Toledo, 1584. Jerónimo (OSH), escritor asceta. El más importante autor espiritual portugués del siglo xvi. Dejó Portugal en 1559 y no volvió hasta 1561. Ya en su monasterio, a mediados de 1561 comenzó a escribir Imagem da vida cristã, en seis diálogos, que publicó en 1563 y obtuvo un éxito inmediato y espectacular. Es la obra que sustenta y perpetúa la fama literaria de este autor. En ese mismo año se le nombró rector del Colegio de Coímbra, cargo que cumplió satisfactoriamente y le dio la oportunidad de consultar las bibliotecas de Coímbra. Esto le decidió a comentar al profeta Ezequiel, obra que publicó en Salamanca en 1568. Pero esta decisión, que le supuso un viaje a dicha ciudad, en realidad era un pretexto para intentar ingresar en el claustro de profesores de aquella Universidad. Allí predicó en San Benito una serie de sermones y fue tal el entusiasmo que provocó entre sus oyentes que una petición para que se le permitiera dar una instrucción adicional de exégesis del Antiguo Testamento, en la Universidad, obtuvo rápidamente un impresionante número de firmas. Pero la petición encontró fuerte oposición en una parte del claustro -en la que se encontraba fray Luis de León- y ni siquiera una real cédula de Felipe II logró vencer la resistencia. La Universidad se privaba -en opinión de muchos- de un hombre que como profesor y teólogo sobrepasaba en mucho a la mayoría de sus adversarios. Sin desanimarse, acudió a la Universidad de Sigüenza, donde encontró una acogida diametralmente opuesta, y obtuvo lo que deseaba. Con todo, como la Universidad no le exigía que ejerciera allí su magisterio, se reintegró de nuevo a su monasterio. Es ahora cuando compuso la continuación de la Imagen [.], en cinco diálogos, a la que llamó "segunda parte" y que se publicó en 1572. Entre 1571 y 1573 fue nombrado provincial y se le confíó el priorato de su monasterio. En 1574 se le autorizó a trasladarse al Monasterio de São Marcos, cerca de Coímbra, donde comenzó su última obra exegética: un comentario sobre Daniel, a la que seguiría una breve exposición de las Lamentaciones de Jeremías y Nahum, que publicó en 1577. Entonces (1575) la Universidad de Coímbra, por propia iniciativa, propuso para él la creación de una Cátedra especial de Interpretación de Sagrada Escritura, a lo que accedió el rey Sebastián en 1576. Hasta 1579 ocupó dicha cátedra. Pero murió el rey Sebastián (1578) y Héctor Pinto se vio envuelto en las intrigas de la sucesión de manera que el que fuera en otro tiempo su protector, Felipe II, al unir Portugal a la Corona de España, temió la actividad política y el entusiasmo patriótico portugués del buen monje, al parecer no sin razón, y el 20 de agosto de 1581 determinó su confinamiento en el Monasterio de Santa María de la Sisla, extramuros de Toledo (España). En 1582 le fue levantada la pena, si bien, como medida de prudencia, se le prohibió volver a Portugal. A partir de entonces nada se sabe de él. Debió de fallecer allí mismo, en la Sisla, en 1584. Santos (1680) dice que le pusieron sobre el sepulcro este epitafio: "Hic iacet Hector Lusitanus ille". 8 hojas, inclusive portada con tabernaculo arquitectónico xilográfico, dentro los datos de título y editor. 806 páginas, 1 hoja de colofón del impresor, con su marca grabada, 50 hojas, inclusive las "Licencias de impresión", fechadas en Madrid a 17 de agosto de 1568. En la hoja de guarda dos notas de antigua propiedad, la primera fechada en 1750; la segunda dice: "Le compré en Aranda del Duero el año de 1812, en donde tenian depositados los Franceses de Napoleon los libros de las librerias de Expera(?), y los tenian depositados para hacer cartuchos. me costó diez reales.
