Direct from the library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper, and S. F. Widdrington's bookplate to the front pastedown. Collated complete, with thirteen black and white plates by the author with tissue guards, and a photogravure frontis from a painting by Ralph Hedley. Hedley was a realist painter, woodcarver and illustrator, best known for his paintings portraying scenes of everyday life in the North of England. "Quis separabit?" ("Who will separate [us]?") is derived from the Vulgate translation of Romans, 8:35: "Quis nos separabit a caritate Christi.", translated as "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?". In a cloth binding. Externally very smart. Very slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Front hinge slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound.
