Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 237-254, 5 fig. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to Jeffrey Henderson. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Almost everybody knows a story plot when they see one in a movie or a tale. But it is hard even for experts to articulate what story plot is, what it does, and how readers or audiences follow one. Since the 1970s, theorists of narrative have expanded our sense of how plot functions, but many actual plots still elude satisfactory analysis. Somewhere in the experience of every story lies a plot that the fans of that story have somehow seen and engaged with. If it could be retrieved into awareness, the whole story experience and its significance might come into a clearer light. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…

Condizione: Gut. Reprint from 1938. XXXI, 271 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Samuel Eliot Bassett's classic work The Poetry of Homer investigates the rhetorical techniques that have made the Iliad and the Odyssey speak to audiences throughout the ages. Combining a sublime poetic sensitivity with thorough scholarship, this work offers original analyses of many topics, including the Homeric narrator's presentation of his story, the evocation of character through direct speech, the organization of speeches and descriptions into vivid dramatic situations, the pacing and emotional weight of similes and narratorial interventions, and the expressive variation in rhythms and word-groupings. A prolific and insightful contributor to Homeric scholarship, Bassett was invited to deliver the Sather Classical Lectures at Berkeley on The Poetry of Homer, but he died with the manuscript unpublished. This work, published posthumously in 1938, has left its mark on a generation of classicists. Lexington Books is proud to bring such an important and influential book back into print in this new edition, edited and introduced by Bruce Heiden with a foreword by Greg Nagy. Condizione: Gut. XVI, 254 Seiten / p. - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Although scholars routinely state that the Iliad, is an "oral poem," since very near the time of its composition the great epic has circulated as a text stabilized in writing. Thus whether or not it is in some sense "oral poetry," the Iliad undoubtedly has features that render it quite satisfactory to readers and reading. But the question of what these features might be has been difficult for modern Homeric scholarship even to frame, much less address, within the research paradigm of "oral poetics." -- In Homer's Cosmic Fabrication Bruce Heiden delineates a new approach aimed at evaluating what the Iliad furnishes to readers that makes it comprehensible and engaging. His program conceptualizes the act of reading as a flexible repertoire of cognitive functions that a reader might deploy in collaboration with the poem's signs. By positing certain functions hypothetically and applying them to the poem, Heiden's experiments uncover the kind and degree of suitable "reading material" the poem provides. These analyses reveal that the trajectory of events in the Iliad manifests the central agency of one character, Zeus, and that the transmitted articulation of the epic into chapter-like "books" conforms to distinct narrative subtrajectories. The analyses also show, however, that the fixed sequence of "books" functions suitably as a design that cues attention to the major crises in the story, as well as to themes that develop its significance. The transmitted arrangement therefore furnishes an implicit cognitive map that both eases comprehension of the storyline and indicates previously unexplored pathways of interpretation. Through Homer's Cosmic Fabrication enthusiasts of the Iliad will gain enhanced understanding of the epic's poetic design and the philosophical rewards it offers to thoughtful study.
