Deeply embedded in wide-ranging discourses, these notions often mirrored social conflicts and challenged political and religious authori…ty. Ritual, Caste, and Religion in Colonial South India, through a detailed analysis of Tamil and Telugu sources, and through an examination of the newly established print media of the time, explores the impact these notions had on society. Within the Tamil context, there is special focus on the different forms of the Saiva Siddhanta revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, which reveals a wide range of responses to the social and religious challenges of colonial society in South India and Ceylon. In the wake of Tamil renaissance, Brahman dominance was questioned, and other groups like Vanniyars, Nadars, or Paraiyars tried to renegotiate and improve their social and cultural status. This led to a transformation of social space and the change of 'caste' status in colonial south India. This volume of essays argues, however, that the Telugu context was different and needs to be evaluated on its own terms, despite its close historical interactions with Tamil sources within the Madras Presidency.

Der Autor analysiert einen Teil der sogenannten Later Chronicles Nepals, des Teiles, der sich mit Jayasthitimalla befaÃt. Jayasthitimalla herrschte im vierzehnten Jahrhundert über das Kathmandu-Tal und gilt noch heute als ein…er der bedeutendsten Reformer des nepalischen Sozialsystems. Wie kà nnen jedoch Chroniken, die im neunzehnten Jahrhundert entstehen, 500 Jahre zurückliegende Wirklichkeit adäquat beschreiben? Wessen Wirklichkeit beschreiben sie? Denn aus den dazwischenliegenden Jahrhunderten sind keine historiographischen Quellen überliefert. So entsteht im Laufe der Untersuchung ein überraschendes Bild: Keine der Taten, die Jayasthitimalla zugeschrieben wurden, ist historisch belegbar. Vielmehr beweisen Sprache und Inhalt der Chroniken, daà die Verfasser hinduistisch ideale Topoi anführen und ihre eigene Zeit beschreiben. 1769 war das Kathmandu-Tal von einem Nachbarvolk, den Gorkhas, erobert worden. Die in manchen Versionen der Chroniken auftauchenden Kastenlisten sind auch ein Zeugnis der Reflektion über das Aufeinandertreffen zweier Sozialsysteme; sie beschreiben mitunter im Detail die Tätigkeiten und Zeiten ritueller Unreinheit einzelner sozialer Gruppen. Sie lassen darauf schlieÃen, daà hier und in anderen Teilen der Chroniken Vorarbeiten für das Muluk-i-Ain, einen Gesetzescode, der in der Mitte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts entstand, eingeflossen sind. Die Chroniken haben somit viele Funktionen. Sie dienen einerseits als Ort der Aufbewahrung, weniger der Vergangenheit als der Ereignisse der Gegenwart. Gleichzeitig betonen sie aber durch aus anderen Kontexten bekannte Topoi die Richtigkeit des Geschehenen, der Geschichte. Damit legitimieren sie schlieÃlich die Gegenwart, die Eroberung des Tales. Jayasthitimalla, der paradigmatische Herrscher, dient als historische Substanz, um welche Geschichte geschrieben, Geschichten erfunden werden. Die Faktizität des Beschriebenen ist für die Verfasser nicht in erster Linie relevant, Ãbergänge ins Fiktive sind flieÃend. Geschichte muÃte in Nepal aus Geschichten bestehen, etwas, was sie in der westlichen Wissenschaft nicht darf, ohne ihre Seriosität zu verlieren. Jedoch welcher Ansatz wird der Vergangenheit gerechter in einer Zeit, wo postmoderne Geschichtstheorien den Wahrheitsanspruch der Geschichtswissenschaft vehement hinterfragen.
