By the time of his death in 2010 at the age of 84, Sir Charles Mackerras had achieved widespread recognition, recorded extensively and developed into a conductor of major international significance. In addition to areas in which he already had forged a distinctive profile (Janacek, Mozart, Handel, Sullivan) he revisited - and rethought - much of the standard repertoire. The last thirty years were particularly momentous in the coming to fruition of so manycherished projects: not only the Janacek operas but the Gilbert and Sullivan series, the Mozart operas, the two Beethoven cycles, other projects with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (Schumann and Brahms at Edinburgh; the outstanding late Mozart) and at the Royal Opera House and the Met. Unspoilt by fame, and undeterred by personal tragedies and increasing physical frailty, he remained productive and inventive: for him music-making, whether with world-classsingers and orchestras or with students, was a kind of joyous oxygen that kept him going right to the end. A detailed account of his life is complemented by contributions from performers and scholars who worked closely with Mackerras, as well as interviews with his family. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and documents, and includes a comprehensive discography along with listings of many of his concert and opera performances. While SirCharles's whole life is considered, emphasis is given to his final quarter century, a period in which so many important projects were realized. Commissioned by the Dutch music-lover De Jean, it is concertante in character throughout: in the virtuoso opening movement, in the arioso central section and in the exuberant closing Rondeau the flute is treated as a solo instrument. The autograph manuscript has been classified as lost since 1945. According to the Köchel Catalogue it bore the original dating 'Mannheim il 25 dec.1777'. The dynamics and articulation provided by the sources are extremely sparse. In this respect the present edition for flute and piano largely follows the source material. The purpose of this arrangement is to enrich the flautist 's repertoire by a masterpiece from Mozart's chamber music.Instrumentation:for flute and pianoKV 285; Das wohl bekannteste der drei 'Mannheimer' Flötenquartette dürfte jenes in D-Dur KV 285 sein. Neuware - Fast schon, als wäre es die Intention des Komponisten gewesen, finden die beiden Werke von Gabriel Fauré in dieser Edition in Form von Bearbeitungen für Flöte und Klavier (durch Heinz Stolba) zusammen. Die Pavane entstand 1887 als Opus 50 des französischen Komponisten für Orchester und Chor ad libitum, während die Sicilienne, op. 78, für Cello und Klavier auf das Jahr 1893 zurückgeht. Bereits kurz danach fand diese als instrumentierter Satz Eingang in seine Schauspielmusik op. 80. In beiden Kompositionen, sowohl im eleganten Schreittanz als auch im wiegenden barocken Tanzsatz, exponiert Fauré die Flöte als thematisches Melodieinstrument. Auffällig ist, dass er das Instrument beide Male auch gerne in seiner sonoren, geheimnisvollen und fast beschwörend wirkenden tiefen Lage erklingen lässt, weshalb Stolba die Originaltonarten übernimmt, um dem ursprünglichen Charakter auf authentische Weise zu entsprechen. In der wunderbar schlichten Melodie, die im Kontrast zu einer raffiniert und subtil nuancierten Harmonie steht, verwirklicht sich die Flöte in einem cantablen Fluss lieblicher Anmut.
