A handsome oversized presentation of the journals, sketches, and lithographic views created by Scottish artist David Roberts during his landmark 1838-1839 journey through Egypt, Nubia, Sinai, Petra, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon. Drawing upon Roberts' original journals and artwork preserved in the National Library of Scotland, the volume reproduces many of the images that made his monumental publications Egypt and Nubia and The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia among the most admired travel and archaeological works of the nineteenth century. The book combines excerpts from Roberts' travel diary with full-page color plates depicting iconic sites including Abu Simbel, Karnak, Luxor, Philae, Jerusalem, Petra, Baalbek, and the Nile Valley. The large-format production and high-quality color reproduction make this an attractive reference for collectors of travel, exploration, Egyptology, biblical archaeology, and nineteenth-century art. Near Fine book in Very Good+ dust jacket. Green cloth binding remains clean and bright with sharp corners and strong gilt lettering. Interior appears clean, bright, and unmarked. Binding is tight and square. Dust jacket shows light shelf wear, a few minor surface scratches, and mild edge rubbing with a small bump at the upper spine corner; no significant tears observed. Jacket remains highly presentable. Overall a superior collector's copy. First American Edition / First Printing, confirmed by the complete number line on the copyright page. David Roberts was one of the foremost British topographical artists of the nineteenth century and a member of the Royal Academy. Born in Edinburgh, he began as a decorative and theatrical painter before gaining international fame for his detailed architectural and landscape views. His 1838-1839 expedition through Egypt and the Near East produced hundreds of sketches that became the basis for some of the most influential visual records of the region prior to modern archaeology and photography. His lithographic publications remain highly sought after by collectors and historians.
