Wrixon (Solicitor-General of Victoria) (19pp); Parliaments, Elections and Candidates: A Lecture Delivered at the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, on Monday, 5th September, 1870, by R. Murray Smith (24pp); Beyond the Grave: A Lecture Delivered at the Town Hall, on Tuesday, 15th November, 1870, by the Rev. J.E. Bromby (Principal of the Church of England Grammar School) (24pp). A very SCARCE series of lectures issued together under the one banner title. From the introduction: "The first lecture in this volume inaugurated the winter series, 1869, and was published in pamphlet form, but met with so limited a sale, that it was considered inexpedient to continue the experiment. Considerable disappointment and dissatisfaction having been expressed, at the the non-publication of the whole of the first series, the Committee determined to make arrangements for publishing each lecture of the winter series, 1870". With "Typographical Errors" errata sheet bound in prior to the "Creation versus Development" lecture. "The Early Closing Association was a Victorian organisation formed by retail workers in the 1850s who attempted to improve their working conditions. One of their goals was to legislate shop closing times. Instead of petitioning the government, going on strike or protesting in the street, retail workers tried to persuade the public and shop owners that shorter hours would be best for everyone. They called this 'moral suasion' and they relied on people supporting shorter shopping hours out of the goodness of their hearts. Eventually, the Early Closing Association called on the government to limit shop trading hours." Bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine, blind-ruled borders to covers, original plain brown endpapers. Spine title: "Lectures - Early Closing Associ.n". Slight shelfwear, soiling to covers (mainly rear), hinges tender, minimal foxing, remnant of small label to front pastedown, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy of an uncommon book. RARE. SB-16.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. He writes that he will be 'glad to receive your future contributions', but that 'a different style of annotation would make them more interesting to the general reader. - To the possessors of Henderson your remarks will be useful and interesting; but… the article is not one to be read throughout by those who do not possess Henderson's work'. He suggests that 'a better plan would be to take a definite prophecy, print the whole of it with corrections or marks'. He is sending a 'specimen' (not present) of what he means, 'in an article on the 2nd. Psalm in the Bibliotheca '. TWO: 1p., 12mo. Bifolium. He will be 'very glad to receive such an article as you propose to send. Perhaps you have seen that your article is expressly mentioned in the "Colonial Church Chronicle" of this month'. The book he offers Arnold 'will reach me if sent to Rivingtons (3 Waterloo Place)'.
