The spine is age-tanned. 8 ½ x 5 ½, 214 pages, 10 ounces XX [From a review by anthropologist Evon Z. Vogt] Oxchuc is another municipio (or "tribe" as Siverts prefers to call it) in those remote and fascinating Highlands of Chiapas in Southeastern Mexico that have been the setting for so much ethnological field research in the past fifteen years. And all with good reason since the Chiapas Highlands contain one of the major populations of contemporary Mayas in Middle America. Not only do these populations of Tzotzil and Tzeltal speakers offer opportunities to study the rich complexities of the traditional ways of life-varying blends of the ancient Maya and the post-Conquest Spanish and Mexican-but they also display significant trends of change as these contemporary Mayas cope with both the perils and the potentials of the modern world, just now reaching into their isolated mountain habitat. The setting provides exciting possibilities for controlled comparisons among the varieties of "tribes" that live contiguously in the zone to the East, North, and West of San Cristobal las Casas. We now have some monographs appearing on the Tzotzil ? but the Tzeltal have not yet been as well represented in the roster of ethnographies. Hence, the appearance of Professor Siverts' book on Oxchuc in Spanish translation from its original 1965 publication in Norwegian is a welcome addition to the corpus of knowledge on Highland Chiapas. ? we are at last moving toward enough coverage to begin controlled comparisons and to arrive at some general statements concerning uniformities and variations in the cultures, social structures, and ecological adaptations of these more than 200,000 contemporary Maya Indians. Siverts is not the first to work in Oxchuc ?. With the advice and assistance of Villa Rojas, Siverts undertook further work in Oxchuc during three field trips-1953-54, 1961-62, and 1964. His work was focused upon the hamlet of Mesbilja' in the eastern part of the municipio. In spite of its general title, Siverts' book does not pretend to present a rounded ethnography of Oxchuc. It contains essentially three parts: 50 pages on Highland Chiapas, including a brief but a useful summary of the history and geography and of the contemporary Ladino-Indian cultural situation, plus a description of San Cristobal las Casas which serves as the political control point and principal market town for the Highlands; 120 pages on the kinship and social structure of Oxchuc, forming the central focus of the book explicitly expressing the principal ethnographic and theoretical interests of Professor Siverts; and finally a brief fifteen-page discussion of what has happened to Oxchuc with the arrival of the Protestant missionaries. XX Henning Siverts (born May 21, 1928 , died December 1, 2001) was a Norwegian social anthropologist.
