Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. The Dominican inquisitor Heinrich Krämer, or Institoris, won lasting notoriety as the co-author of the witch-finder's handbook, Malleus maleficarum, an edition of which Koberger published only nine days before this treatise, which comprises 36 sermons preached by Krämer in Augsburg Cathedral. Krämer defended the right of the faithful to worship hosts that had been miraculously preserved, in opposition to those such as Jean Gerson who warned against superstitious cults of dubious origin. "The treatise constituted a defence of the so-called wunderbarliches Gut (wondrous good), a miracle-working bleeding host in the Holy Cross church in Augsburg, which was claimed to have been miraculously preserved since its transformation in 1199 and had become the subject of episcopal enquiry and considerable controversy in the 1490s" (Zika). In Krämer's view, incorrupt or bleeding hosts confirmed the Real Presence, and his defence of their veneration was an indirect attack on those who doubted the reality or ubiquity of witchcraft. Provenance: The library of the Order of Hermits of St Augustine in the Monastery of Seemannshausen, Lower Bavaria, with early ownership inscription on title "Ad conventum St. Magdalenae in Seemanshausen ord. Eremitarum S. C. Augustini", and with another fainter inscription above: "Ad usum fratr. August. [?]". BMC II, 441; BSB-Ink I-233; Bod-inc I-021; Goff I170; GW M12496; Hain 9233; ISTC ii00170000. Remboitage of contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, lacking clasps, catches still present. Leather book label of Doris Louise Benz (1907-1984). Red penwork initials, underlines, paragraph marks, and capital strokes throughout, characteristic of rubrication in incunabula from this monastic library. Title thumb-soiled at lower outer margin, small worming at gutter to first gathering, marginal tear in outer margin of h1 not affecting text, small tears in last two leaves repaired without loss; overall, very good.

Early edition of the "the most important and most sinister work on demonology ever written. It crystallized into a fiercely stringent code previous foklore about black magic with church dogma on heresy, and, if any one work could, opened the floodgates of the inquisitorial hysteria . [it was] the source, inspiration, and quarry for all subsequent treatises on witchcraft." - Robbins, Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology. The Malleus Maleficarum was first printed by Peter Drach, and is dated to circa 1487 as some copies include a separately printed approbation dated 19 May 1487. A second edition was printed before August 1490. This is the third edition produced by Drach, and is dated conjecturally 1492 to 1495.
