Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. 12mo. (20 cm.) [10]3-311p. Green cloth with blind-stamped double rule on the front cover and gilt letters on the spine. Top edge maroon, fore-edge untrimmed. Henrietta Leslie [nee Raphael] was born in 1884 in London into a wealthy, cosmopolitan, and assimilated Jewish family. After her father's untimely death and her mother's single-minded pursuit of her career as a painter, Henrietta was raised by a series of governesses and tutors to become a shy and timid child. During this time, she fell out of sympathy with Judaism and "her precocious reading of William Hickling Prescott's THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO left her with a profound hatred of war." In 1902, Henrietta married Louis Mendl, a union which soon proved to be problematic. While she drifted apart from Mendl, she gravitated toward the company of writers who encouraged her to try writing herself. A friend introduced her to the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), but her work for suffrage created internal conflict: she supported women's civil rights, but she hated and feared the violence of the WSPU's campaign. AFter leaving Mendl in 1910, she published her first novel THE ROUNDABOUT (1911), as Gladys Mendl, following it with THE STRAIGHT ROAD. iN 1913, Henrietta married Harrie Leslie Schutze and they resettled in London in a happy marriage. "Schutze supported the women's suffrage campaign and respected the growing independence and self-confidence participation in the movement gave his wife." Henrietta acted as a courier for the movement, "carrying documents rolled inside her hair and clothing." The Schutzes suffered ostracism during WWI and Henrietta used this experience as "the basis for her most popular novel, MRS. FISCHER'S WAR (1930). In 1916 she adopted the pseudonym by which she was best known, Henrietta Leslie, and under this name published more than 20 novels, three plays and an accountof life in Bulgaria, WHERE EAST IS WEST (1933). She was "indefatigable when researching a novel, once traveling with a theatrical company and earning acceptance as a member of the troupe when gathering background for her novel MOTHER OF FIVE (1934), about a stage family. .She was an outspoken critic of the limitations society placed on women and a tireless worker for women's rights, children's welfare, and for peace." [Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]. Very minor wear to extremities, cloth clean, spine gilt only slightly dulled, else near fine/ No jacket.
