Its numerous illustrations, diagrams, and architectural drawings will be of enormous use to students on every level and to admirers of buildings and architectural design. In photographs, ground plans, and well~chosen details, some 450 structures and building sites may be understood in their entirety. The illustrative material has been drawn from the best sources all over the world, including Central and South America, Africa, and the Orient. Structures from these areas, as well as from others more familiar, are illustrated in recent and excellent photographs. All the ground plans and elevations have been meticulously provided with directional arrows, and scales in feet and in meters. The captions and the index have been prepared with an eye to the multiple uses of this book, as a reference for the interested reader or as an aid to professional study. Five distinguished essays on the major architectural epochs greatly enrich this edition of Key Monuments of the History of Architecture. A glossary and a series of explanatory diagrams of basic structural systems will also amplify the reader's understanding of text and illustrations. This volume is the joint effort of two brilliant young architectural historians: Dr. Millon is Assistant Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Dr. Frazer is Assistant Professor, Department of Art, Vassar College. In its fresh choice of architectural examples and its vivid writing, the book presents the most recent outlook on architectural history. Today, buildings once thought inaccessible are becoming familiar to everyone, and the student of architecture will find examples here from all over the world for his study and inspiration.
