NOTE: THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THIS BOOK MAY REQUIRE EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES FOR DOMESTIC PRIORITY MAIL OR SHIPMENT ABROAD XX [From the dust jacket flaps] In the depths of the American depression, Dick Tracy, the square-jawed, straight-shooting nemesis of crime and criminals, begins to wage his campaign against the most colorful and bizarre rogues ever to grace a police station or a comic strip. These adventures, 14 complete stories, most of which have not been reprinted since they appeared, feature the major characters of this classic comic strip. Here at last are the great Dick Tracy adventures in a volume which gives the complete daily strips and the Sunday pages for each of the 14 stories. Beginning with the Texie Garcia Caper, which is the second story in Dick Tracy's history (the first appeared in THE CELEBRATED CASES OF DICK TRACY, published by Chelsea House in 1970), the reader can trace the early development of one of the outstanding fictional detectives of the twentieth century. Chester Gould, the creator of Dick Tracy, took his inspiration from the crime-filled world of Chicago and from the fantasies of Hollywood. For example, Big Boy is a take-off on Al Capone and Stooge Viller bears a close resemblance to the gangster movie character of Edward G. Robinson. However, Gould was more than a comic creator. He was a master storyteller and millions of readers, both young and old, turned avidly each day to the perilous adventures of the durable detective. In a period of deep national gloom, Dick Tracy began a career against crime, and after more than four decades, his adventures are still followed intently by millions of Americans. Tracy is a detective in a large American city (easily recognizable as Chicago) with his ever-faithful sidekick, Pat Patton, and his adopted son, Junior. Like most true heroes, Tracy rarely smiles nor is he funny but there is no doubt that his war against the rogues' gallery of criminals served as mass entertainment for the bedeviled American public. The Tracy strip, for all its mayhem and violence, had a strong undercurrent of fun for millions of readers, devotees of all ages. These early stories (and there is a chronologically complete run from November 1931 through October 1933) introduce all the major characters of that era, including Junior, Pat Patton, Tess Trueheart and Chief Brandon.
