Gr.-8°, Ln. m. SU. XIX, 411 S. Neuwertiges Ex. ISBN: 9783161506062 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 758.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Keith Cunningham (Dustwrapper design) (illustratore). First UK Edition. Second impression of the first British Commonwealth edition, published in 1965. The book was originally published in Germany in 1930. The first translation into English (by Geoffrey Dunlop) appeared in 1932 titled "Death and the Lover". The first edition under this title was published by Peter Owen / Vision Press in 1959, also translated from the German by Geoffrey Dunlop. Dustwrapper design by Keith Cunningham. ***Near fine in light-grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. There is just a very light vertical reading crease to the spine. Edges of page block clean. Internally also near fine, with no ownership details. No foxing to interior pages. Pages clean. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which is marked 3rd impression. The dustwrapper is complete, and not price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 25s. The extremities of the dustwrapper are just slightly rubbed and creased. No chips or tears. No marks at all to the white areas of the dustwrapper. The red titles on the spine have faded to orange but are still legible. Dustwrapper bright. ***190mm x 130mm. 287 pages. ***'Hermann Karl Hesse (2 Jul 1877 - 9 Aug 1962) was a German-born Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge and spirituality. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.' (Wiki) ***'Since its original publication this novel has been regarded as one of Hesse's important works; it is the story of Goldmund's journey into life and his search for its meaning. The sensual and artistic satisfactions of Goldmund are in contrast to the spiritual peace of the monk, Narziss, who helps him in his search for self-realisation. The setting of the book is medieval Germany, and the basic theme is the significance of the mother in human destiny. As in his other major works, however remote and exotic the background, Hesse combines the verbal mastery of Flaubert, the psychological insight of D. H. Lawrence, and the intellectual sophistication of Thomas Mann.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A second impression of the first UK edition in its attractive original third impression dustwrapper - in very nice, bright collectable condition. These Peter Owen editions of Herman Hesse's works are surprisingly hard to find in this collectable condition now, and this is one of the finest we have come across. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
