Er absolvierte zunächst eine Apothekerausbildung, anschließend studierte er in Genf Chemie und promovierte 1895 zum Dr. phil. In Berlin studierte er dann Pharmazie und in Strasbourg Medizin; 1902 promovierte er in Strasbourg noch zum Dr. med. 1907 habilitierte er sich an der Universität Leipzig mit einer toxikologischen Arbeit ("Curarestudien") und wurde Privatdozent. 1913 erhielt er eine außerordentliche Professur in Freiburg i. Br., 1915 übernahm er das Ordinariat für Pharmakologie an der Universität Königsberg. 1921 wechselte er an die Universität Leipzig und 1924 an die Universität Bonn, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahre 1937 wirkte. Hermann Fühner starb 1944 in Bonn.
