Früh verstorben, war der k. k. Ingenieur slowenischer Herkunft - mit dem eigentlichen Namen Herman Potocnik - in den letzten Lebensjahren in Wien als "Noordung" in den Ruf eines genialen Vordenkers des bemannten Raketenflugs gekommen. Sein Buch, eigentlich eine Art Lehrbuch der Astronautik, wurde zur Bibel für die Raketenbauer der dreißiger Jahre. Zu den Bewunderern Noordungs gehörte etwa auch Wernher von Braun, der spätere Konstrukteur der V2 und Vater des amerikanischen Raumfahrtsprogrammes. Der Roman "2001 - Odyssee im Weltraum" von Arthur C. Clarke und der gleichnamige Film Stanley Kubricks bezogen sich explizit auf Noordungs Theorien der Raumfahrt. Noordungs Buch über das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums blieb jedoch weithin verschollen und wird hier nach einem der wenigen erhaltenen Originale wiedergegeben. Moscow: ONTI NKTP, 1935. 198 x 132 mm. Original pictorial wrappers, ends of spine chipped, front hinge a bit weak. Light toning but very good. First Edition in Russian, translated from the German edition (Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums: Der Raketen-Motor) published in late 1928. Rare, with only one copy (at Caltech) cited in OCLC. Poto nik, a native of Slovenia, was one of the founders of astronautics. His sole book, published shortly before his death from pneumonia in 1929, dealt at length with the possibility of establishing orbiting space stations to facilitate space travel. Expanding on ideas put forth by Hermann Oberth and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Poto nik proposed a three-part toroid (doughnut-shaped) station, consisting of "a wheel spinning on its axis to provide artificial gravity, a solar power plant, and an astronomical observatory. Among other innovations, he counted on harnessing the energy of the sun by using a huge parabolic mirror to focus its rays. [His book] considered in remarkable depth all the practical problems in manning a space station-cooking, eating, bathing and even walking" (Von Braun and Ordway, History of Rocketry and Space Travel [3rd ed.], p. 202). The Russian translation of Poto nik's work, issued two years after the formation of the Soviet Union's state-subsidized rocketry institute (RNII), most likely was read and consulted by Sergei Korolev, RNII's chief engineer and later head of the USSR's space program. . …
