Theorie über die Einheit eines sinnlichen Vorstel-lungskomplexes von der Natur. Die Kunstgeschichte braucht hier nur die Erkenntnisse der modernen Kunst sich zu eigen machen, die in den sogenannten historischen Stilformen nur das variable Material der stets gleichbleibenden Grundformen des künstlerischen Denkens sieht und in dem Stil mithin nicht das Dogma seiner klassischen Formulierung als vielmehr in all seinen Gestalten die wechselnden Theorien über den künstlerischen Einheits- und Schönheitsbegriff zu erkennen sucht. Man wendet so gerne den aus der "tonangebenden" Baukunst gewonnenen Stilbegriff der Gotik oder Spätgotik auch für die charakteristischen Eigenarten der übrigen gleichzeitigen Erscheinungen der Plastik oder Malerei an. Auf diese Weise findet man natürlich genau das, was man sucht, und die Stileinheit der Zeit wird sich so leicht erweisen lassen. Das Problem wurde hier anders gefaßt und die Erkenntnis jener Stileinheit auf anderem Wege zu gewinnen getrachtet ohne Rücksicht auf die "Künste", sondern allein im Hinblick auf die Kunst. Es sollte ohne jene Stilvorurteile in dem einzelnen Objekt der besondere Akt der sinnlichen Vorstellungsweise erfaßt und im Zusammenhang mit den übrigen Zeugnissen auch eine Charakteristik des allgemeinen Wesens bestimmter, zeitlich und national umgrenzter Abschnitte der Kunst versucht werden. Ein zu weit gefaßter Stilbegriff büßt seine Berechtigung durch den Verlust des Vorzuges seiner wörtlichen Prägnanz ein, und ein zu eng gefaßter vernichtet die Individualität und den lebendigen Reichtum des Kunstwerkes, indem er an seine Stelle ein ästhetisches Abstraktum setzt. Das gilt für den Begriff der Gotik ebenso wie für den der Renaissance. - Kunstgeschichte ist deshalb hier vorwiegend als eine Geschichte der menschlichen Erkenntnis ohne einseitige Anwendung des Begriffes von "Aufstieg und Verfall" für bestimmte Zeitabschnitte betrachtet worden, in der Gewißheit, daß durch eine solche Gliederung des Stoffes subjektiv ethische Werte zwischen den forschenden Betrachter und die objektive Erkenntnis sich schieben. Wir vergessen zu leicht, daß alle Forderungen des Lebens nur durch einen Tribut an den Tod bezahlt werden. Es gibt keine sogenannte Blütezeit einer Kunst, die diese Blüte nicht auch durch die Aufgabe köstlicher Erkenntnisse der vorangegangenen Zeit erreicht hätte, keine "Verfallzeit", die nicht mit positiv neuen Erkenntnissen auf dem Schauplatze der Historie erschien, von der willkürlichen Abgrenzung derartiger zeitlicher Komplexe abgesehen. Für die auf objektive Erkenntnis dringende Kunstwissenschaft darf der Stilbegriff nicht den der Manier im Gefolge haben. Man lobt und tadelt auf Grund eines subjektiven Erkenntnisideals, nicht aber systematischer Grundsätze, die die objektive Erkenntnis der künstlerischen Idee zum Ziele haben.
