Antonio was owned by Thomas Ferguson, Esq., trained by J. Ferguson, and ridden to victory by jockey John Lonsdale—marking Lonsdale's historic third consecutive winning ride in this prestigious race. The original print carries a respectful dedication from the publishers to Thomas Ferguson, Esq., noting the horse's elite lineage: "By Octavian, dam by Evander, out of Miss Gunpowder."Artist Background:John Frederick Herring, Sr. remains one of history's most celebrated equestrian artists. Having moved to Doncaster in 1814, his passion for racing was ignited by witnessing "William" win the St. Leger. In 1825, The Doncaster Gazette officially commissioned Herring to paint the definitive series of St. Leger winners starting from 1815; this vibrant portrait of Antonio is the fifth entry in that legendary historical series.
