Instrumentenhistoriker können wertvolle Informationen über die Entstehungsbedingungen der Instrumente zusammentragen, was das Verständnis eines bedeutenden Teils der Musikgeschichte vertieft. Der Fokus liegt nicht auf der Produktionstechnik oder dem handwerklichen Können, sondern auf den theoretischen Kenntnissen, die für den Entwurf und die Konstruktion von Musikinstrumenten entscheidend waren. Dazu gehören Proportions- und Zahlenlehre sowie die kunsthandwerkliche Ausstattung. Auch der Bildungsstand und das Erfahrungswissen der damaligen Musikinstrumentenbauer sowie die verwendeten Längenmaße vor Einführung des metrischen Systems werden berücksichtigt. Analysen dieser Maße ermöglichen die Zuordnung unsignierter Instrumente. Zeichnungen und Fotos unterstützen die Erschließung des Themas, während Farbfotos die kenntnisreiche Behandlung bereichern.
