In den vergangenen funfzehn Jahren machte die Forschung so erhebliche Fortschritte, dass eine durchgreifende Neubearbeitung geraten erschien. Obwohl die aussere Anlage der ersten Auflage nicht verandert wurde, ist der Text innerhalb der einzelnen Paragraphen nicht nur grundlich uberarbeitet, sondern oft neu gestaltet. Ziel des Uberblickes bleibt es, auf dem neuesten Stand der Forschung in die Geschichte und Entwicklung der mittelindischen Grammatik einzufuhren und eine Ubersicht uber den erreichten Forschungsstand zu bieten. Dabei bedeutet die Konzentration auf die altere Sprachperiode, dass vor allem Pali und Ardhamagadhi, also die alten Sprachen von Buddhismus und Jainismus, berucksichtigt werden. Anders als in den Grammatiken von Pischel und Geiger wird ausserdem auch die Sprache der Inschriften herangezogen. Ein besonderes Anliegen der zweiten Auflage ist es ferner, den erheblichen Materialzuwachs im Bereich des nordwestlichen Mittelindisch durch reiche Neufunde von alten Handschriften in Gandhari einzubeziehen, soweit der Forschungsstand dies bereits erlaubt.
