Cloth. Condizione: Very Good Indeed. Not stated (illustratore). First edition. A first edition of this heavily illustrated work about the Porta Argentariorum, an ancient Roman arch commissioned by money-changers. A first edition of this illustrated work on the Arcus Argentariorum, an ancient Roman arch that was partly incorporated to the Western wall of the San Giorgio al Velabro in Rome in the seventeenth century. As the dedicatory inscription indicates, the arch was commissioned by the local money-changers and merchants in honour of Septimius Severus and his family. Alongside an analysis of this inscription, Haynes and Hirst offer a detailed description of the gate, its relief sculpture, and the legends associated with it. The majority of the pages are untrimmed. There is a tear in the title page to the top edge. In a green quarter cloth binding over hard boards. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the spine, a little more so to the joints and the head of the spine, with some marginal bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light foxing to the endpapers, pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
