First edition, with the errata sheet loose as issued; one of 450 copies only. Simultaneously an homage and riposte to Hogarth's moralizing series of the same name, A Rake's Progress was Hockney's first major print series, reproduced on a smaller scale here and juxtaposed with Posner's poem. While Hogarth's rake descends into ruin, Hockney's is faced with a crisis of identity, rather than morality. Illustrated with 16 reduced halftone letterpress blocks after etchings by Hockney. Original black cloth boards with slide-on plastic spine binder, front cover lettered in grey, illustrated endpapers, printed on Dual White Proven art paper. With original packing box. Spotting to boards, first and last leaves, and errata: otherwise, a very good copy with illustrations clean and bright.…
