Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The title of this exhibition has been chosen with care in order to cover the wide scope of material that it contains. A bow should at once be made to the only other large-scale showing of the sort in America: the pioneering exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1936) a quarter of a century ago. There the title was Painters and Sculptors as Illustrators, and the catalogue was by Monroe Wheeler. This exhibition is to show, primarily, what major artists of Western Europe and the United States have contributed in book form during the last hundred and, especially, the last sixty "explosive" years. The absence of well known names will indicate that some important European and American artists passed the medium by. Among these Cézanne, van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat -to take the French artists as an example. But those French masters who did concern themselves were far more numerous: Daumier, Courbet, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Vuillard, Redon, Rodin and nearly all the later "School of Paris," beginning with Derain, Dufy, Picasso, Braque, Rouault, and Matisse. As a result, the French have recently awarded books by these artists a special name or classification: "les livres de peintres." The phrase has also come to mean books that contain original graphic work by the masters in question. Books by sculptors of equal eminence are included in this category - hence the Museum of Modern Art's 1936 title -but not books by that special classification of artists who are primarily engaged in illustration.
