Mit seinem Freund Christian Wilhelm Jacobs unternahm er 15 Jahre lang regelmäßig Streifzüge durch den Thüringer Wald, ehe sie 1807 den ersten umfassenden Reiseführer für dieses Gebiet herausgaben. Neben einer allgemeinen Übersicht über Natur und Wirtschaft sowie über die Bewohner werden auch die einzelnen Täler ausführlich vorgestellt. In ihren Neigungen und Kenntnissen ergänzten sich v. Hoff und Jacobs vorzüglich, während ersterer die geologischen, mineralogischen und hydrographischen Teile übernahm, fiel Jacobs die Schilderung der Bewohner und ihrer Gewerbe sowie von Pflanzen und Tieren zu. Die Zuverlässigkeit der Darstellung, vor allem aber die Originalität der geologischen Beschreibungen, führte dazu, daß der stilistisch anspruchsvolle und unterhaltsam geschriebene Reiseführer bis weit in die zweite Hälfte des vorigen Jahrhunderts seine Bedeutung behielt und als vortreffliches Werk gerühmt und genutzt wurde. Heute stellen vor allem die Schilderungen der Menschen und ihrer wirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit ein eindrucksvolles Zeitdokument des ig.Jahrhunderts dar, einer Zeit, da Reisen auch im Herzen Europas noch Pioniercharakter trugen. Verlag und Herausgeber nehmen den 150.
