Herbert Hoover's place of birth was the American heartland; but for much of his life, he was a stranger to his native country, and never more so than while he was its president. His career followed a pattern familiar in the history of the United States - not quite the log cabin to the White… House, but almost. In the years of the world's peril after 1939, he fought a lonely battle against the dominant opinion that the fate of the United States could not be detached from the fate of men elsewhere. He died unpopular and isolated -largely disavowed by his own party and embittered by the lack of understanding.
