Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Published as part of The Metropolitan Opera Classics Library, this volume presents Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier: Comedy for Music in Three Acts, one of the most beloved operas of the twentieth century. The libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal is reproduced in both German and English, accompanied by a story adaptation (The Cavalier of the Rose) written expressly for this edition by Anthony Burgess. The book was issued by Little, Brown and Company in Boston and Toronto in 1982, marking the inaugural volume in the series. Beyond the complete libretto and narrative adaptation, the book includes a foreword by Anthony A. Bliss (then General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera), an extended introduction and critical reevaluation by George R. Marek, and a synopsis by John Cox. Supplementary material includes historical notes, selected bibliography and discography, and documentation of Der Rosenkavalier at the Metropolitan Opera. The volume is richly illustrated with full-color production photographs and stage-set designs drawn from the Met's archives. The book is bound in blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and emblem to spine and front. Condition of the book is Near Fine, showing only light handling; the binding is tight, and the pages are clean and unmarked throughout. The dust jacket is present and graded Very Good+, with mild surface scuffing and light edge wear but no chips or losses. The original price of $16.95 is intact on the front flap. The copyright page states First Edition, with copyright © 1982 by the Metropolitan Opera Association. No remainder marks, bookplates, or ownership inscriptions are present. This is a complete and well-preserved example of the first printing. Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) was an English novelist, critic, and composer, best known for A Clockwork Orange. Trained in music as well as literature, he brought a rare dual perspective to his critical writing, combining technical musical insight with literary analysis. Burgess wrote extensively on opera and classical music, and his introductions are valued for their clarity, wit, and ability to situate works within broader cultural and historical contexts.
