The libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal is reproduced in both German and English, accompanied by a story adaptation (The Cavalier of the Rose) written expressly for this edition by Anthony Burgess. The book was issued by Little, Brown and Company in Boston and Toronto in 1982, marking the inaugural volume in the series. Beyond the complete libretto and narrative adaptation, the book includes a foreword by Anthony A. Bliss (then General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera), an extended introduction and critical reevaluation by George R. Marek, and a synopsis by John Cox. Burgess wrote extensively on opera and classical music, and his introductions are valued for their clarity, wit, and ability to situate works within broader cultural and historical contexts.
