Hohlfeld was born in Dresden, promovierte in Leipzig with a work on old English literature, and emigrated to the US in 1889. Professor Romance Languages at Vanderbilt until 1900, then Professor of German at the University of Wisconsin, where he became an institution. Unusual in this volume of essays on Faust and Goethe are the comments on other Faust researchers: Karl Ernst Schubarth und die Anfänge der Fausterklärung (1938), reviews of Korff, Faustischer Glaube, and Ernst Beutler's Faust und Urfaust edition (1939).
