A fine copy, the bindings square and tight, the contents clean and bright throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Issued in a limited edition of 1980 copies of which this example is numbered 649. A beautifully produced Folio Society facsimile of the 1929-1931 Golden Cockerel Press edition of 'The Canterbury Tales' with beautiful engravings by Eric Gill, one of the most successful Golden Cockerel Press titles. In the accompanying essay 'The Golden Cockerel Press, The Canterbury Tales and Eric Gill', Peter Holliday details the historical context of Gill's work, his process and his close relationship with The Golden Cockerel Press, for which he also illustrated 'Four Gospels' and designed typefaces.
