More often found in State and university libraries this is a RARE copy for SALE. This atlas was the first to be so intentful and determined to survey the continent as comprehensively and culturally explicitly as possible. A strong, venerable and dignified volume with over 800 wonderful wood cut engravings. In general good condition. Quarter bound in leather. The board cover is scuffed, stained from storage and worn. The gilt printing is bright and bold. The leather corners are worn but intact. The spine is worn and cracked but is smart and stately. The six gilt decorative blocks are clear. The binding is as muscular as a sheep-hand. The covers are strong, very firm and healthy. The papertrims have gilt edging that is a little worn but otherwise fresh. The ash front and end papers are whole with some storage markings. There is mild foxing throughout the atlas. The frontis protective sheet is whole but has some foxing. The pages of text are clear and confident. The illustrations are complete and utterly wonderful and finely detailed. The maps are clean, very clear, sharp and absorbing. The coloured maps are bright, fresh and sure. The pages are very firm against the spine.
