It was organized by the Computing Research Group, Australian National University and the Division of Mathematics and Statistics, CSIRO. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr M.L. Dow was unable to participate. At short notice, Professor D. Elliott reviewed Cauchy singular integral equations, but a paper on same is not included in these proceedings. The interested reader is referred to the recent translation of V.V. Ivanov, The Theory of Approximate Methods and their Application to the Numerical Solution of Singular Integral Equations, Noordhoff International Publishers, Leyden, 1976. An attempt was made to structure the program to the extent that the emphasis was on the numerical solution of integral equations for which known applications exist along with explanations of how and why integral equation formalisms arise. In addition, the programme reflected the broad classification of most integral equations as either singular or non singular, as either Fredholm or Volterra and as either first or second kind.…

First and only edition, first printing, never translated out of Dutch, of this uncommon account by a European doctor of his Hajj, undertaken with the consent of Ibn Saud in 1935. The work describes his meetings with Ibn Saud shortly after the assassination attempt on the king, his performance of the holy rituals, and encounters with numerous pilgrims, with many of his excellent photographs reproduced as plates. In response to a request from Ibn Saud to improve Hajj facilities in the Hejaz, Pieter Henricus Van Der Hoog (1888-1957) was dispatched by the Dutch government to Jeddah in the late 1920s to help Egyptian and Syrian doctors improve the city's hygiene. There, he converted to Islam and secured permission from Ibn Saud to return to conduct the Hajj in 1935. The present account of that year details chronicles his meetings with the King soon after the attempt on his life, and describes various Islamic customs and rituals. Hoog's Hajj sees him travel from Egypt to Jeddah by steamer, before journeying to Mecca to perform the rituals. His ascension of Arafat alone on his donkey is recorded in the frontispiece. In Mecca, Van Der Hoog helped the wife of a friend give birth, for which he received a piece of Kiswah cloth, the design reproduced on the front board. He also discusses experiences meeting a range of pilgrims, from a Senegalese resident who had journeyed for three years on foot, to an Indian official with his guards and cars. A well-preserved account of the Hajj from the unusual perspective of a European, with only around a dozen institutional copies located outside the Netherlands. Large octavo. Original black cloth, title and front board lettered in gilt, front cover with red and gold vignette of the Kiswah cloth that was gifted to the author in Mecca, map endpapers.
