UN PROTOTYPE D'ÉDITION ILLUSTRÉE PAR LES SUITES GRAVÉES ANCIENNES 2 vol. in-12° (165 x 106 mm), [3] ff. - [1] pl. - ci pp. - [1] pl. - [1] f. - 257 pp. - [87] pl. + [1] f. - [222] pp. numérotées de 259 à 480 - [52] pl., cartonnage à la bradel, demi-veau rouge estampé d'un quadrillage, dos lisse orné, tranches naturelles, non rog…née en gouttière et en queue (Reliure de l'époque). Édition non illustrée, truffée de pages de titre imprimées sur papier filigrané « T. DE LA RUE & Cie » ainsi que de 2 célèbres suites de gravures pour les Contes. Cet exemplaire unique pourrait avoir été établi en vue d'un projet d'édition illustrée. On y trouve : Une copie en contrepartie de la suite de 59 gravures réalisée par Romeyn de Hooghe pour la première édition collective et première illustrée des Contes, parue chez Henry Desbordes à Paris en 1685. Gravures découpées avec titre du conte contrecollées sur feuillets blancs. Suite complète, avec le frontispice portant le titre « Contes de Mr. La Fontaine enrichis de taille-douce ». Seule illustration contemporaine de ces récits licencieux, la suite de De Hooghe est considérée comme un chef d'oeuvre. Une copie en contrepartie de la suite des 81 gravures (seconds frontispices et vignettes in-texte non-compris) réalisées par Charles Eisen pour l'édition dite « des fermiers généraux » (Amsterdam [Paris], 1762). La figure illustrant « Le cas de conscience » apparaît en 2 versions, l'une « couverte » (sexe de l'hermaphrodite censuré) et l'autre « découverte ». La plupart des gravures de cette seconde suite, non-signées, semblent être issues de la contrefaçon « assez jolie » de 1777 (Cohen I 571-572). 5 d'entre elles, signées « Boily », « C. Boily » ou « Boily sculp » semblent provenir de la contrefaçon d'Amsterdam, 1764 (Cohen I 571), jugée comme la plus réussie. D'autres gravures portent les signatures « Binel 1763 » (« La courtisane amoureuse »), « Milcent sc » (« A femme avare galant escroc », « Le Magnifique ») ou encore « Balibeth [?] » (« La coupe enchantée »). Un portrait de l'auteur gravé par Ingouf Junior d'après Hyacinte Rigault (1778). Deux culs de lampe imités des culs de lampe de Chouffard pour l'édition des Fermiers généraux, découpés et rapportés. Soit 141 planches et deux culs de lampe. PROVENANCE : Victor Diancourt (1825-1910) : Ex-libris gravé à la devise « Eligere Colligere Legere » contrecollé au contreplat supérieur. Bibliophile, homme politique et écrivain, Victor Diancourt fut maire de Reims, sénateur de la Marne et président de l'Académie de Reims. À sa mort, la plus grande partie de ses livres furent légués à la bibliothèque municipale de Reims. Toutefois, près de 16 000 volumes disparurent en 1917 dans l'incendie de l'Hôtel de ville, où ils étaient entreposés. Les quelque 3000 ouvrages survivants firent en 2016 l'objet d'une exposition organisée par la Bibliothèque municipale de Reims (« Le goût des livres : Victor Diancourt, collectionneur champennois »). Quelques frottements. Un cahier décalé, gravure imitée de De Hooghe pour "On ne s'avise jamais de tout" légèrement rognée, quelques rousseurs.

Cet exemplaire comprend 40 (sur 42) belles et grandes figures gravées, signées ou monogrammées par Romeyn de Hooghe (manquent les planches 20 et 21). Les gravures sont imprimées recto-verso et séparées par un feuillet blanc. Autres éditions : Anvers, 1700 et Amsterdam, 1673, 1694 et 1702. Texte en espagnol. Reliure en mauvais état (dos épidermé et manques de cuir, frottements sur les coupes et coins), plusieurs anciennes restaurations de papier, 3 feuillets blancs intercalaires font défaut, outre le feuillet des planches 20 et 21, quelques petites taches sans conséquence. Modeste exemplaire de cet ouvrage néanmoins d'une grande rareté.
