Pages not numbered except vol II at rear 90 page biographies section are the only numbered pages, but must be over 1000 pages in all, mostly pages are illustrated from photographs, photogravure /photo-engraving, must be over 1000, some full page and protected by tissue paper. Condition; Both with the original cream/vellum hardback bindings Good, some ageing, dirt, vol I rear some of the edge cream/vellum rubbed through to the card. Embossed Gilt titles to front covers & spines. Size approx each 28.5cm x 24cm. Contents Very good to mint, very good clean endpages, very tight volumes to both vols., did not notice any inscriptions, 2 folding colour maps vol I, must be about 1000 plates within both vols, plate pages with tissue guards, including Vol 1 scenes of Africa, India, Hong Kong, and most if of the commonwealth, Vol 2 hundreds of portraits of the Notable Men of the Empire including rulers, politicians. ambassadors, governors and various Indian Maharajahs, also Thakor Sahel of Gondal & one of the Rane of Gondal (India) on one page, some British Admirals & Lords etc., etc. Size approx 28.5 x 25 cm and both together are approx 16cm thick & heavy. The splendid illustrations by Joseph Pennell and Dudley Hardy were commissioned for this work, which concludes with 131 portrait plates depicting the trustees, managers, and members of the Stock Exchange's general purposes committee. Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), a friend of Whistler and Sargeant, established himself as a leading etcher of landscape and architectural prints. Dudley Hardy (1867-1922) remains known for his influence on English poster design, with his best-known being Gaiety Girl (1893). This attractive volume includes the "History of the Stock Exchange" by Charles Duguid, then City editor of the Westminster Gazette, and includes discussions on the sporting endeavours of the Exchange's members, its benevolent fund, and the orchestral society which it established in 1883.
