Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. This collection of essays was presented to Barrie Dobson in celebration of his 70th birthday. It will be welcomed by all scholars of pre-modern religion and society. Spanning the artificial divide between medieval and early modern, the contributors - all acknowledged experts in their field - pursue the ways in which men and women tried to put their ideals into practice, sometimes alone, but more commonly in the shared environment of cloister, college or city. The range of topics is testimony to the breadth of Barrie Dobson's own interests, but even more striking are the continuities and shared assumptions across time, and between the dissident and the impeccably orthodox. Taking the reader from a rural anchor-hold to the London of Thomas More, and from the greenwood of Robin Hood to the central law courts, this collection builds into a richly satisfying exploration of the search for perfection in an imperfect world.

This is the clothbound issue made up from the first nine parts of "Book Handbook", a book collecting journal published between 1947 and 1952 which was then incorporated into the longer-lasting Book Collector. It described its aim: "Our plan is to give information on interesting points about books, about their authors, printers, or publishers, and about their previous possessors. This will lead us to include within our purview bookplates and handwriting, autograph letters, historical documents, armorial and other bindings, illustrations, and so forth. The articles and bibliographies to be published . . , are contributed by librarians and experts of the highest standing, but we hope that from time to time owners will favor us with descriptions . Of their Illuminated manuscripts and rare books, or indeed of any book however humble or ordinary which may be of interest to others." As an illustration of its contents, the first isue included such articles as: "Books from the Library of Jacques Auguste de Thou," by L. J. Lloyd; "The Life of Robert Bage, Paper-Maker and Novelist," by Catherine Hutton; with a preliminary survey for a bibliography of Bage's novels by B. A. Osborne; "'Sir John Franklin and the Search for the North-West Passage," by Jean Gallatly; a biographical sketch and bibliography of E. R. Eddison, author of "The Worm Ouroboros," written and compiled by G. Rostrevor Hamilton; . "The Techno-Chemical Receipt Book," a discussion by W. S. Field of one of those ever-fascinating recipe books containing directions for the manufacture of artificial gems, liquors, blasting compounds, bleaching agents, colored - chalk, confectionery, preparations for removing boiler incrustations, artificial meerschaum (made by "digesting raw potatoes in sulphuric acid") and other recipes of varying degrees of useful knowledge." together with a section devoted to reviews, notes and notices.
