Er besteht aus 15 Landkreisen und den beiden Stadtkreisen Potsdam und Brandenburg. - Für die ehemalige Provinz Brandenburg, deren Kerngebiet der heutige Bezirk Potsdam ist, sind seit 1907 Kreisinventare erarbeitet und veröffentlicht worden. Große Bereiche blieben jedoch bis heute unbearbeitet, so fehlt z. B. ein Inventar des Stadtkreises Potsdam. Aber auch die erschienenen Inventarbände sind durch Veränderungen und Verluste des Denkmalbestandes in ihrer Verwendbarkeit eingeschränkt. - Anstelle der herkömmlichen Kreisinvenlare werden in der DDR zunächst vorrangig Bezirksinventare zum Bestand der Bau- und Kunstdenkmale veröffentlicht werden, deren erstes der vorliegende Band ist. - Die Denkmale des Bezirks Potsdam stellen einen wesentlichen Teil der märkischen Kunst dar, deren große Leistungen im Mitlelalter und im 18. bis 19. Jahrhundert liegen. Zentren der frühen Kunst sind der Bischofssitz in Brandenburg sowie die Zisterzienserklöster in Lehnin und Zinna. Die Spätgotik, vom Wachstum des Bürgertums getragen, erfährt in den Städten ihre besondere Ausprägung: In Brandenburg, aber auch in anderen Städten wie Jüterbog und Wittstock, entstehen Baudenkmale mit reicher Ausstattung, die das Stadtbild noch heute bestimmen. Nach einer weniger fruchtbaren Zeit von fast zwei Jahrhunderten beginnt im 18. Jahrhundert mit der spätbarocken und klassizistischen Kunst des preußischen Absolutismus eine Entwicklung, die ihren Mittelpunkt in der ehemaligen Residenzstadt Potsdam mit den weltbekannten Schlössern und Gärten hat. - Der vorliegende Band leitet eine Veröffentlichungsreihe des Instituts für Denkmalpflege der DDR ein, die den Gesamtbestand der Bau- und Kunstdenkmale nach Bezirken geordnet darstellen wird. Der erste Band, der dem Bezirk Potsdam gilt, ist typisch für den Aufbau der Reihe: Der Bezirk ist in Stadt-und Landkreise gegliedert, die in alphabetischer Ordnung aufeinanderfolgen. Eine Übersichtskarle zu jedem Kreis verzeichnet alle behandelten Orte, dazu die wichtigsten Land- und Wasserstraßen. Innerhalb der Kreise sind die Gemeinden wiederum alphabetisch geordnet. Ein Ortsregister am Ende des Bandes ermöglicht das Auffinden von Gemeinden bzw. Ortsteilen, deren Kreiszugehörigkeit dem Benutzer nicht bekannt ist. Die kurzen, knapp gehaltenen Beschreibungen der einzelnen Bau- und Kunstdenkmale des Bezirks Potsdam werden ergänzt durch 830 Abbildungen.
