Top edge a little dust soiled, circular blind impressed original book seller name and place to top corner of front free end paper- Franklin, Central Rlwy Station Newcastle. Pencil name of author to reverse. Erased previous owner name to top margin of title with date remaining under-1852. Light occasional marginal soiling, binding remains fairly tight but unsurprisingly glue to back strip beginning to fail, sewing and mull remains secure with no cracks to end papers. Seal, 41 Grande Rue" pages have a handled look and feel with a few edge thumb marks and an owner signature on first blank, "Edward J Ward" a barrister at Lincoln's Inn was bitten by a dog in 1940 and died from rabies. Told to me over 40 years ago by Olive Harris his ward at the time who was subsequently evacuated to Wisbech and from whom I bought the book. Small octavo. *NOTE Chandos Wren-Hoskyns BA, JP, DL (15 Feb 1812 - 28 Nov 1876) was an English landowner, agriculturist, politician and author, this 1st edition with the George Cruikshank illustrations is now a scarce agricultural title to locate. This is a sojourn of gentle humour and hard learned experiences learning to farm. A lovely quote I saw worth repeating was "houses are built by fools for wise men to live in". George Cruikshank.
