Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents foundational naval warfare theory from the 17th century, providing insight into the tactical principles and maneuvers used in managing and manoeuvring fleets at sea during battle. The author, a Jesuit priest and mathematician who participated in many naval battles and advised renowned admirals, provides a tactical framework for ship placement and movement to gain the weather gage or double on the enemy, and to avoid being doubled on. The text draws on historical examples, such as the Battle of Lepanto, and provides practical guidance on forming and reforming lines of battle amid changing winds, explaining the tactical significance of each manoeuvre. Through mathematical principles, the author demonstrates how to chase and close in on enemy vessels and to block their escape routes. This book is a valuable resource for naval history enthusiasts and students of historical warfare, offering a window into the strategic thinking of the era and the mathematical precision involved in naval tactics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A Treatise on Naval Tactics. Hoste, P. Paul. Edinburgh: Bell and Bradfute. Translated by Captain J. C. Boswell, R.N.F.R.S.E. With 52 plates and additional notes and illustrations. The first major work on naval tactics, originally published in France in 1697, this is the first translation in English, with additional material and updating of the illustrations. Hoste (1652-1700) was a Jesuit priest and naval tactician. Paul Hoste (1652-1700) was a Jesuit priest, mathematician and naval tactician who produced this first major work on naval tactics. He spent 12 years at sea. As was his background, his tactics were based on mathematical principles and provided a new more organized framework for maneuvers during sailing. Hoste established the five standard orders of sailing - for a fleet while moving or preparing for battle - and these are discussed in the narrative. His work was the standard text for naval officers for more than a century. (Wikipedia). The 52 plates are engraved and have tissue guards. Most of them are charts showing positions of ships, but many of them have attractive vignette illustrations -- one is a seascape/map and the other a reproduction of an engraving by William Howison showing ships at sea. handsomely bound (rebound at some point) in half leather and marbled boards. Spine has large gilt titles in dark red leather band and four gilt-decorated raised bands. Large volume, 9x11 inches, 178 pages (not including the 52 plates). Page edges have a marbled effect when book is closed. Very good condition, some foxing to pages, and the title page is quite foxed as is the one engraving. ***Heavy, so may require extra postage.***.
