Lieutenant Emile Auguste Leon Hourst (1864-1940) started from Timbuktu in January 1896 and navigated the Niger from that point to it…s mouth, executing a careful survey of the river, the first Europeans to accomplish this journey. The expedition took a year travelling in a specially constructed 100 foot barge. A very nice copy of the first edition in the publisher's dark-blue cloth.
