4to. (8), 304, XCIX, (4), 1 blank, 5, (1) pp., 1 blank leaf. With engraved title vignette showing the coat of arms of the Barberini family, as well as Saints Peter and Paul. With woodcut initials. Printed in red and black throughout. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin, monogrammed "CVCD" and dated 1684, over wooden boards with handwritten spine title, four raised bands and two clasps. Early (4th) edition of this popular work of liturgical music by the Archbishop of Mechelen, Matthias Hovius (1542-1620), first published in 1602 and reissued as late as the 19th century. It provides music and corresponding lyrics for choral singing. The appearance of the coat of arms of the Barberini family is a reference to Urban VII (Maffeo Barberini), as this work was issued during his papacy. The blindstamped covers, dating from 1684, show the coat of arms of the Discalced Carmelite order with the banner bearing the prophet Elijah's words: "Zelo zelatus sum pro domino deo exercituum". - Paper slightly browned and wavy, small ruststains from the clasps on the endpapers and the lower pastedown. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his signed and stamped ownership, dated 1984, to front pastedown. - OCLC 643050989. For the Discalced Carmelites cf. LThK V, 842.

Antwerpen, ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Ioannem Moretum, M. DCII. (1602). Livres.
