Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 94 Pages Indexed. Geometry is certainly the branch of mathematics which most attracts the layman. Nowhere with so much power as in geometry do truth and beauty appear so intimately connected. Was it not Fenelon who said: Defy the bewitchments and devilish charms of geometry attracted first of all by the supreme harmony of forms, the mind soon lets itself be captivated by the wonderful chain of ratiocination to which they have given rise. It wishes to pursue more profoundly its excavations in this monument of pure classic beauty: mathematics. Ancient Greece, until Euclid, regarded mathematics as an art more than a science, but although there often are fascinating aesthetic satisfactions which stimulate contemporary mathematicians to cultivate their beloved science, the modern Occident has not sanctioned this point of view. It is to the cultured man of the twentieth century who has known how to appreciate this beauty but whose business has kept him away from the Temple of Mathematics that we wish to dedicate this work. After making a hasty survey to recall the condition of geometry in the last century, we shall endeavor to show the influence of the notion of group in geometry and we shall seek to guide the reader, in the simplest possible manner, from the concrete notions of elementary geometry to the modern conceptions of" abstract spaces.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Cover photograph: Garrett-Howard (illustratore). 1st Edition. Not a book but a pair of 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Visual Sound Stereo" vinyl records. "Your Number Please," Liberty LST 7130, shows near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket split about 1/3 of the way back to top and bottom. Original silver-on- black label. Jacket warns this is a "non-compatible long-playing record; to be reproduced" -- by which they surely mean "played" -- "with a stereophonic cartridge only." The smoky-voiced Miss London offers up "The More I See You," "Makin' Whoopee," "Two Sleepy People," "When I Fall In Love," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," etc. "Julie Is Her Name, Volume Two," Liberty LRP 3100, with Howard Roberts on guitar and Red Mitchell, bass / Produced by Bobby Troup, shows near-fine vinyl in a very-good glossy cardboard jacket with a sticker pull to lower right of front panel. Original turquoise label. The smoky-voiced Miss London offers up Rodgers & Hart's "Blue Moon" and "Spring Is Here," Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" the Gershwins' "How Long Has This Been Going On," Irving Berlin's "I Got Lost In His Arms," etc. London (1926-2000), a favorite WWII pin-up girl and 1945 graduate of the Hollywood Professional High School, was discovered by talent agent Sue Carol (wife of actor Alan Ladd), while working as an elevator operator. (Honest.) Known for her sultry, smoky voice (literally -- she was a chain smoker), she was named most popular American female vocalist for 1955, 1956, and 1957 by Billboard magazine. Subject of a 1957 cover story in Life magazine, she was quoted saying, "It's only a thimbleful of a voice, and I have to use it close to the microphone. But it is a kind of oversmoked voice, and it automatically sounds intimate." London performed her million-selling 1955 hit "Cry Me a River" in the 1956 film "The Girl Can't Help It" and the recording gained later attention in the films "Passion of Mind" (2000) and "V for Vendetta" (2006), though Miss London will of course always be best remembered for her 128 episodes as Rampart General Hospital's Chief ER Nurse Dixie McCall in the TV series "Emergency!" (1972-1979), a role in which she was cast by her ex-husband (and executive producer) Jack Webb, playing opposite her then-husband, jazz musician Bobby Troup, who lent his talents as emergency room physician Dr. Joe Early. The pair now reduced from $19.
