"It is indubitably true that cooking and eating come very near the top of my special addictions. If you have never eaten one of Hong's [Lin Tsuifeng's] delicious dinners (and how could you have?), you scarcely know the meaning of Chinese food, certainly not its deeper subtleties. Mei-Mei is a young lady who mixes an excellent cocktail (but does not drink it) when her mother gives a dinner" (pp. xv-xviii).
