Tout changea en 1945, lorsqu on découvrit à Nag Hammadi, à quelque 130 km au nord de Louxor, douze livres reliés en cuir et plusieurs feuillets d un treizième, au total près de 1200 pages de papyrus. De 1993 à 2007, une collaboration franco-québécoise a permis de préparer, pour la Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, la première traduction française intégrale de ces textes, complétés par ceux, en partie parallèles, du Codex gnosticus de Berlin.
