Kwaliteit en omvang van de collectie onderstrepen de vooraanstaande plaats die Amsterdam van de zestiende eeuw tot… omstreeks 1900 als zilverstad innam. De collectie is veelzijdig en telt ruim vierhonderd objecten. Hieronder bevinden zich spectaculaire voorbeelden van schutterszilver uit de zestiende eeuw, afkomstig van de drie Amsterdamse schutterijen. Uit de zeventiende eeuw bezit het museum een aantal kapitale bekerschroeven en ander ceremonieel stadszilver. Hoogtepunt is het lampetstel dat Johannes Lutma - de beroemdste Amsterdamse zilversmid in de Gouden Eeuw - vervaardigde ter gelegenheid van de inwijding van het nieuwe stadhuis in 1655. De achttiende en negentiende eeuw zijn vertegenwoordigd met een uitgelezen verzameling luxe gebruiksvoorwerpen: van zilveren terrines, kandelaars en kastanjevazen tot gouden snuifdozen en andere verfijnde mode-accessoires. De bestandscatalogus bevat twee inleidende hoofdstukken over de verzamelgeschiedenis van het stadszilver en de productie van Amsterdamse tafelserviezen in de negentiende eeuw. In het catalogusdeel zijn alle voorwerpen uit de verzameling beschreven en afgebeeld, inclusief de belangrijkste keuren. Hierna volgt een omvangrijk hoofdstuk met biografieën van meer dan tweehonderd zilversmeden, van wie zich werk in de collectie bevindt. In de bijlage is de enig bewaard gebleven insculpatieplaat van het Amsterdamse Goud - en Zilversmidsgilde gepubliceerd.
