Blue cloth rubbed with light spotting, slight flaking to front board's otherwise vibrant gilt lettering, front board decorated with color pictorial paste-on of inauguration throng at the US Capitol building, spine's gilt lettering remains vibrant. Scattered foxing throughout but strongest on several early leaves. Binding is firm. Else a very good copy. Three-line ink inscription upon front free endpaper: "To Ferman E. Duckworth | From | Senator John Sparkman." Large glassine envelope affixed upon rear pastedown contains a (H) 10 inch x (L) 8 inch b/w portrait photographic print of Senator Sparkman additionally inscribed in white ink: "To Ferman Duckworth | With best wishes | John Sparkman." Alabama Democratic Party politician John J. Sparkman (1899-1985) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1936 to 1946 and in the U.S. Senate from 1946 to 1979 as well as being Adlai Stevenson's vice-presidential running mate in the 1952 U.S. presidential election. Includes essays "The Search for a Usable Past" by Henry Steele Commager (pages 77-86), "The Contributions of the Civil War" by Bruce Catton (pages 87-88), and "The Twentieth Century" by Paul Horgan (pages 89-95). Title within elaborate woodcut strapwork border (dated in manuscript), woodcut portraits, armorial shields, initials and head-and-tailpieces, eighteenth century annotations and scoring, inscription of Richard Thomas, 1775 at head of dedication, a few leaves towards end with shaved headlines, occasional water stains, small ink stains and light soiling, front endpaper detached, bookplate, later blindstamped calf, spine faded, a little rubbed, armorial book stamp to fpd, boards with gilt turn ins, marbled text block edges. In the 1580s, Sir Henry Sydney, lord president of Wales asked the antiquary David Powel to prepare an English edition of Caradoc's medieval history based on a translation by Humphrey Llwyd. It was the source of the legend of the discovery of America by the Welsh prince Madoc ap Owen about 1170, which for 'centuries spawned countless tales of encounters with Welsh Indians on the American frontier' (ODNB).
