The wraps are in near fine condition (smudging on back cover). 8 x 8 3/8, 45 pages, 10 ounces XX [From the introduction] This catalogue and the accompanying exhibition are limited to material from Texas, although origins and influences upon Texas pottery are much wider in scope, It is the intent of the catalogue and exhibition to demonstrate the significance of pottery in Texas for various cultures through the past 1000 years. For our purposes, the divisions of culture and chronology are the following: native aboriginal Indians, Anglo-American potters, and contemporary potters. Many Indian groups in Texas made pottery. The examples presented here, however, come from the peoples of the Caddoan area whose cultural development is now being studied by the archeologists. The second division comes with the influx of settlers of European background into Texas and begins around the time of the Republic of Texas. The third division occurs at about 1940 when changes in preferred pottery form and function began to shift away from utilitarian wares until a very different kind of Texas pottery is now produced. However, a tradition of art and craftsmanship continues which goes back hundreds of years and touches many cultures. The common denominator of all these various cultural artifacts is, of course, clay. Its geological origins are the result of weathering of rock and secondary deposition, and it is found almost everywhere in Texas. Its properties of plasticity when raw and durability when fired enable it to become finished products with a variety of forms and functions. It is this phenomenal diversity within the cultural contexts which produced it that we are presenting. The impact of European technologies is clear when considering aboriginal hand built, low fired vessels in comparison with those of the early settlers, who introduced the wheel, nonporous glazes, and higher firing techniques. Contemporary potters have access to all these various technologies as well as revolutionary mass-production techniques, computerization and mechanization. Parallels of form and function in Texas pottery range from plain functional vessels to decorative art pieces. The cultural significance of these parallels is, however, noteworthy. For example, highly embellished and carefully built Caddoan vessels were buried with their dead, and the motifs which adorned these vessels may have been symbolic. Cooking and other utilitarian vessels were plentiful and necessary for daily existence. …
