Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SORROW WHISPERS IN THE WINDS: NATIVE AMERICANS AND THE REPUBLIC, Ellen N. Murry, softcover, probable first edition, illustrated1992. ITEM CONDITION: fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a…prior owner. Not a library item or remainder. The wraps are in near fine condition (printed on thick, glossy paper; original bookstore price tag affixed to back cover), 2-staple binding. 11 x 8 ½, 28 pages, 10 ounces XX This publication was produced in conjunction with the exhibition, Sorrow Whispers in the Winds: Native Americans and the Republic, February 29, 1992, through October 31, 1992. [From the text] Texas has been characterized as the biological crossroads of North America. Perhaps it could also be considered a cultural crossroads as well, for in the nineteenth century, Texas became the home of more [Indian] tribes of a diversified character than any other state or region in the United States. By the early nineteenth century there were at least twenty-three different tribes residing in the Republic. Some of these tribes, like the Cherokees and the Comanches, would become an integral part of the Republic's culture and history, while other tribes faced survival (accommodation and acculturation), removal, or even extinction, in relative obscurity. There were the Coastal Tribes represented primarily by the Karankawas. There were the Eastern Woodland Tribes, such as the Caddos and related tribes, in addition to others which were relatively recent immigrants to Texas: the Cherokees, Creeks, Shawnees, Delawares, and even Seminoles. There were the Prairie Tribes, represented primarily by the Wichitas and Wacos, along with the immigant Tonkawas and Kickapoos. Finally, there were the tribes representing the Plains Indian culture: the Kiowas, Southern Cheyennes, Arapahos, Lipan Apaches and Comanches. As the first Anglo settlers entered what would become the Republic of Texas, they not only encountered Mexicans, but also the first "Native Texans" - the Indians. By the beginning of the 19th century, these Texas Indians had already experienced 3 centuries of exposure to various Spanish, French, and Anglo American explorers, freebooters, missionaries, traders, soldiers, and settlers. The impact of this contact was immense, from the acquisition of the 'white man's dog' (the horse), to the introduction of diseases like measles and smallpox, and the resulting epidemics. By the early years of the Republic, the eastern and coastal tribes had been decimated by diseases, and most of the first Anglo settlements were outside the usual Comanche range. Consequently, Stephen F Austin's colonists incorrectly perceived Texas to be mostly uninhabited and theirs to claim.

Aggiungi al carrelloWraps. Condizione: Very Good. Star of the Republic Museum, Published 1992. Wraps, 28 pp.; 28 cm; illustrated with black-and-white reproductions of watercolors, portraits, engravings, and museum artifacts. In Very Good condition. Pictorial wraps, the cover reproducing Lino Sanchez y Tapia's watercolor of Cherokee Indians of easte…rn Texas; mild shelf and edge wear, with light bumping and creasing to the edges and corners, some soiling and scuffing, some color loss along the edges and spine, and price sticker residue at the upper right of the front cover. Staple bound, binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Catalog of the exhibition mounted at the Star of the Republic Museum, Washington-on-the-Brazos, February 29 through October 31, 1992, and written by the museum's curator of exhibits, Ellen N. Murry. The title comes from the letter of condolence Sam Houston wrote on March 23, 1843 to the elder Flacco, chief of the Lipans, on the death of his son: "The loud voice of grief is heard from your women and children. Sorrow whispers in the winds." Flacco the Younger had scouted for Jack Hays and the Texas Rangers and ridden with the Somervell expedition to the Rio Grande; he was murdered near San Antonio in the winter of 1842, and the Lipans believed white Texans had killed him. Murry surveys the peoples living in Texas between 1836 and 1846, the Karankawas and Caddos, the Cherokees, Delawares, Shawnees and Kickapoos pushed west into Texas by federal removal, and the Comanches, Kiowas, Tonkawas and Lipan Apaches of the plains, drawing throughout on the accounts of settlers and European travelers (Jean Louis Berlandier, Ferdinand Roemer, Noah Smithwick, William Bollaert, Mary Maverick) and reading those accounts critically rather than at face value. The catalog does not soften what followed: its central section, "Houston and Lamar: Coexistence or Extermination," sets Houston's policy of accommodation against Mirabeau B. Lamar's declared intention to "expel, defeat, or exterminate" the Republic's Indians, and closes on the Cherokee chief Duwali, killed and scalped at the Battle of the Neches. Illustrated with watercolors by Lino Sanchez y Tapia, George Catlin's Buffalo Chase and his portrait of the Kiowa girl White Weasel, John Mix Stanley's portrait of the Delaware scout Jim Shaw, a manuscript in the Cherokee syllabary written by Chief Big Mush in 1836, and artifacts from the museum and the Texas Memorial Museum. With a "For Further Reading" bibliography.
