(Fairfax Murray) Bound in fine contemporary calf, elaborately tooled in gold, edges gauffered and gilded. While the binder is unknown, similar bindings were made in Bologna, Rome, and Venice in the 1520s. Minor wear to the binding, with small losses to the leather, at the upper corners and a small patch along the upper hinge. Head and foot of spine carefully restored. A tall copy with intermittent light damp-stains and light finger-soiling. This volume is profusely illustrated with 268 woodcut images, most of which are by Hans Weiditz. "The medallions of the emperors [and their families] commence with Julius Caesar and end with Frederick III, Maximilian I and his son Philip the Fair, Charles V and Ferdinand I. Most are enclosed in ornamental borders with fauns, cupids, Adam and Eve, Godfrey of Bouillon, Hercules etc." (Fairfax Murray) There are also two divisional woodcut title pages and two leaves bearing large printer's devices. This edition includes a supplemental section: "Elenchus Consulum Romanorum" a chronological list of the consuls printed between decorative woodcut borders. This section concludes with a series of woodcut medallions. The ornate divisional title border shows scenes from the Iliad including Achilles dragging Hector around the walls of Troy. "Besides the borders, there are 84 medallions, obverse and reverse, in the same style as the preceding, apparently by Weiditz." (Fairfax Murray) "A friend and correspondent of Erasmus (who dedicated his translation of Lucian's 'Convivium' to Huttich) and Ulrich von Hutten, Huttich studied at the University of Mainz when the city was a stronghold of the new antiquarian learning. While accompanying Frederick II on a diplomatic mission to Spain, Huttich collected pamphlets describing Spanish and Portuguese voyages to the Americas, later published as 'Novus Orbis' (1532). "Huttich's work falls into the category of Bildnisvitenbücher, collections of portraits of famous men and women, accompanied by biographical sketches. The second edition of Vasari's 'Lives of the Artists' (1568), in which each biography is accompanied by a woodcut portrait elaborately framed, was clearly influenced by this type of popular literature. This edition contains the same text contents as the Basel edition of the same year. Often attributed to Grynaeus, but is more properly credited to Johann Huttich, who compiled most of the work. The work stems from the German-speaking, Protestant intellectual milieu that produced other important early geographical publications. Indeed, the volume opens with Sebastian M nster's 12-page description of the world map that was intended to accompany the book (but is lacking here, as usual), with directions on its use. Published in Paris at the expense of Jean Petit and Galliot du Pr . contains the same material as the Basel edition. The only difference between the two lies in the map, which in the Paris one was designed by Oroncius Finneus - Borba de Moraes. Johann Huttich (1490-1544) was able to access accounts of early Spanish and Portuguese voyagers to America while in Madrid as part of the embassy associated with Charles V's election as Holy Roman Emperor. Included herein are the three voyages of Columbus, as well as those of Vespucci, Pedro Alonso Ni o, Vicente Y nez Pinz n, Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Alvise Cadamosto. In addition to the Portuguese discoveries in Brazil and the East, Huttich incorporates accounts of Marco Polo, and material collected by Peter Martyr. There are also numerous accounts of other European voyages. Huttich's work is one of the earliest to bring together in a single volume a number of otherwise extremely rare contemporary accounts of the earliest explorers, some of which are virtually unobtainable. Huttich had a history of referencing ancient coins, and the coinage illustrations printed in this work encouraged contemporary 16th century coin collecting (see King Phillip II's copy, bound in Salamanca goatskin, for example), making this a very early numismatic reference work, which is still in use today (for example, the American Numismatic Society holds this work in their reference library with shelf number H888 I47). Grynaeus was a theologian of the Reformation; Münster had joined the Franciscans in 1505 but became an apostate in 1529 in order to assume an appointment at the University of Basel, which was dominated by the Reformed Church. Subsequently Basel had become an important center of the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, with many of its printers, including Hervagius, producing Protestant works. The map is identical to that in the first edition of 1532, except for slight variations in type and text, this the issue with "Tropicus Capricorni" printed above the tropical line. Shirley attributes the cartography of this map to Münster and the border decoration to Holbein, who was working with several Basel publishers at the time. It is of particular interest especially for its "richness of artistic decoration" (Shirley). The work contains accounts of the voyages of Cadamosto, the three voyages of Columbus, Nino, Pinzon, Vespucius, Cabral, and part of the Fourth Decade of Peter Martyr, "also many other pieces which do not relate to America" (Sabin). Text in two columns, attractive woodcuts: title, initials, colophon; many marginal annotations, some in English, some partially lost to close cropping (as is one line of text); a rather well-used copy, toned, with some staining, particularly the title and the prelims, various gutter and lower marginal paper repairs: some contemporary to the current binding (using stubs and patches of paper), some later, including tape repairs to a running tear at the lower margin, and a skilled recent repair to the final leaf; ff. The first German translation (first published in Latin in 1532) of this early collection of travel narratives, many of which relate to the New World. It contains the accounts which appear in the first edition, adding Peter Martyr's Decades and De Legatione Babylonica. The volume includes the first three voyages of Columbus, as well as accounts of Cabral, Marco Polo, and Vespucci, amongst others. Translated from the Latin and expanded by Michael Herr, from the 1532 Basel production entitled Novus Orbis. Sabin notes that this 1534 edition 'is less well known and much rarer than the original. The version is somewhat broad, and is distinguished by a certain originality in expression. Although it has no map, it has, on the other hand, the merit of being augmented in the text. It contains a full translation of Peter Martyr's Decades, folios 174-229, and also his three books De Legatione Babylonica, folios 235-248, both wanting in all the different Latin editions. Besides, it contains all the pieces of the first Latin edition of 1532, except Munster's Introductio in tabulam geograph, to which the map belongs, and would, therefore, have been superfluous in this edition.' Delph.1531 Mense Julio") decorated with a finely detailed border of flowers and bunches of grapes, two putti, two mermaids, and the French royal coat of arms below the title banner, woodcut initials. (64V1F) A SUPERB COPY OF THE FIRST PARIS EDITION WITH THE FIRST STATE OF THE RARE DOUBLE-CORDIFORM MAP BY ORONCE FINE. Widely regarded as the first general history of travels, this fine collection of voyages was published in Basel a few months earlier with a world map attributed to Sebastian Münster. Fine's map is "a rendering considerably in advance of any others printed earlier.a detailed woodcut, geographically much superior to the large oval map.in the Basle editions" (Shirley). This new form of projection showing both the north and south poles was used by Mercator in his 1538 world map and by Lafreri in 1560; it is a marked departure from the speculative geography of Waldseemüller and Ruysch. A good portion of the right-hand (or southern) cordum is occupied by the newly discovered but still unexplored Antarctic land mass ("Terra Australis") and given the lack of any knowledge of the region, it is surprisingly accurate. Fine names the lower Pacific "Mare magellanicum," one of the first uses of the navigator's name on a map. The definition of the west coast of Mexico is one of the earliest to show the discoveries of Cortés. The text contains the first three voyages of Columbus, the four voyages of Vespucci, an extract of the Fourth Decade of Peter Martyr, as well as the voyages of Cadamosto, Nino, Pinzon, and Cabral. Other accounts deal with the travels of Marco Polo and voyages to Africa, Russia, Palestine, the Moluccas, and elsewhere.
