Chr. wurde im Nordosten des Azovschen Meeres bei Taganrog die nördlichste der bekannten griechischen Siedlungen angelegt. In der Folge etablierten sich dauerhafte Beziehungen zu Poleis an den Küsten des Schwarzen Meeres und der Ägäis. Dies zeigt sich insbesondere anhand von Transportamphoren und anderen Keramikgefäßen, die zahlreich gefunden wurden. Gleichzeitig mit diesen Ereignissen stieg bis zum beginnenden 3. Jh. v. Chr. die Besiedlungsdichte in der Region deutlich an. Der Band untersucht den Zusammenhang beider Prozesse mittels einer Fokussierung auf den Konsum der aus griechischen Poleis importierten Objekte und fragt nach den Konsequenzen der kulturellen Kontakte. Eine detaillierte Kontextanalyse einer Siedlung sowie eines Gräberfeldes bildet die Grundlage für die Anwendung des kürzlich aus der Ethnologie in die Archäologie eingeführten Modells der kulturellen Aneignung. Dieser handlungsbezogene Ansatz berücksichtigt die Wandlungsfähigkeit von Dingen, die in unterschiedlichen Kulturen mit abweichenden Bedeutungen versehen werden können. Der Zugang setzt sich deutlich von der Vorstellung homogener, anhand von materiellen Hinterlassenschaften als ethnische Gemeinschaften erkennbarer Kulturen ab. Im vorliegenden Buch wird Kulturwandel dagegen als dynamischer und gesellschaftsintern angestoßener Prozess beschreibbar gemacht. Die fundierte Vorlage bisher teils unveröffentlichter Materialien russischer und deutsch-russischer Grabungen, in Kombination mit grundlegenden theoretischen und methodologischen Überlegungen zu Konsumgewohnheiten, eröffnet der deutschsprachigen Klassischen Archäologie einen bisher wenig bekannten Raum am Rande der eurasischen Steppe und wirft neue Perspektiven auf die Erforschung kultureller Kontakte.
