Cocked, edgewear, cover spotting, edgewear, gutter starting, tone with light foxing, wear. Still solid hardcover. ; Children's novelization loosely related to the author's vaudeville extravaganza play of aspirations versus integrity. This children's book is a fanciful journey by nine-year-old Maida who dislikes being a child and yearns to be an adult. After a magical event-filled journey to the North Pole, Maida accepts the value of the sweetness of childhood even as she continues to wish for the adult freedom of staying up late and dressing in gowns. ; x, 194 pages.

Hardback. Condizione: Good. Hy Mayer (illustratore). First Edition. Van Zile, Edward S. Perkins, The Fakeer: A Travesty On Reincarnation. New York, London: The Smart Set Publishing Co., 1903. First edition, first issue with repeated line of text on p. 236. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-10 [11-14] 15-377 [378: blank] [379-381: publisher ads] [382-386: blank].[note: title leaf and frontis are conjugate, printed on slick paper, and inserted as a sort of double plate]. Original dark brown pictorial cloth, front panel stamped in red, white, black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, fore and bottom edges rough-trimmed. Illustrated by Hy Mayer on four inserted plates. (The cover design is also by him, signed "HBM.") Inner hinges cracked and inexpertly strengthened by a previous owner, but binding is firm and this is a good clean copy generally with a striking front cover. #1822. $25. Collects three novellas all dealing with the awkward results of personality exchange. "When Reginald was Caroline" also includes a sex reversal when the husband finds himself -- inexplicably -- inhabiting his wife's body. In "How Chopin Came to Remsen" the same sort of stereotypically stolid middle-class husband falls into fugue states in which he is possessed by the spirit of Chopin, as the family piano indisputably shows. "Clariss'a Troublesome Baby" presents yet another assault on the placid life of a middle-class American family when a widow's eight-old baby turns out to be the reincarnation of her late husband. Bleiler calls the second story "very amusing" and points out that the first was "obviously the source for Thorne Smith's Turnabout." -- The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1628. Van Zile was a regular contributor to Smart Set magazine, a monthly (1900-1908) that attracted many excellent writers who were a bit too daring for the leading slicks of the period, and too high-brow for the pulps. He produced other fiction of a fantastic nature. Reginald 14578. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 V-148.
